Carl Stahl Kromer is a family-owned company near Freiburg im Breisgau. We currently have 33 employees. We have been manufacturing first-class cable hoists for more than 100 years and, despite our modest size, are among the leading manufacturers in this area. Our spring balancers and zero-gravity balancers win over customers throughout the world with their innovative technology, first-class material, the best workmanship, and an excellent price-performance ratio. In many well-known companies all over the world, Kromer products contribute to smooth processes and ergonomic work stations.
The greatest possible product quality and comprehensive customer service are among our greatest concerns. At the same time, we see it as our obligation to meet our customer’s expectations, comply with legal requirements, and maintain our good reputation. Environmental protection is also one of our priorities, as is the maintenance of jobs and the well-being of our employees. We are dedicated to these issues.
All Kromer products are manufactured at a single location in southern Germany, where they are subjected to daily analysis and optimization. Quick, smooth manufacturing processes, cutting-edge machines, and constant, careful quality checks by our motivated staff ensure that each final product is of outstanding quality. Our products are remarkable for their precise technology, some of which is patented; careful material selection; and exceptional performance. Kromer’s spring balancers and zero-gravity balancers make it a confirmed quality leader, one that outperforms the competition in all tested areas. Our customers also know and appreciate that we manufacture a large proportion of the parts installed in our cable hoists ourselves. This ensures careful monitoring of quality and availability. Because we are not dependent on our suppliers, we can ensure short delivery periods at all times.
A modern, optimized work environment is important if we are to continue to succeed in manufacturing high-quality products according to the most recent standards. That is why we try to keep our operations at the state of the art in every respect. This includes good production plant and office equipment and staff comfort – such items as short walking routes and communication channels; a clean, open design for the production hall; ergonomic tables and chairs; well-lit offices; and spacious staff kitchens and break rooms. We are creating the necessary preconditions for everyone to perform his duties effectively with optimum motivation under the best possible working conditions. Staff health is also important to Kromer, of course. Three of our staff members are trained in providing first aid, and there is an easily accessible AED for emergencies.
Environmental protection and sustainability are also values that are important to our company. A functioning ecosystem is the foundation for the existence of our society and must not be endangered. We are dedicated to minimizing waste, conserving resources, and limiting our environmental impact as much as possible. Among the measures to achieve this goal are increasingly reducing paper usage, introducing a modern scanning system, and developing a well-thought-out environmental management concept which all staff are bound to support. Carl Stahl Kromer is also environmentally certified according to EN 14001.

Kromer is a family-managed business with a long tradition and a great deal of experience. Over many years, and with a great deal of passion and dedication, we have developed into a company that enjoys great popularity and leads the market when it comes to quality. Find out about our eventful history, which reaches back to the 19th century.
Our history starts in 1868 with our founder, Theodor Kromer, who is known today as a pioneer of the lock industry. The company headquarters were initially in Neustadt and were moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1872. Kromer’s roots are in the manufacture of safety systems of the highest quality. An especially significant and groundbreaking invention was the prize-winning protector lock, for which Kromer filed a patent in 1874. The protector lock was a double-bit lock that could be machine-made, so that it was cheap and could be produced in large numbers. Kromer locks were certified as having first-class quality, which is why they were widely used for years in well-known banks and prisons. The expertise gained in lock-making and the great value placed on quality were maintained when Kromer moved to a completely different product area in 1917 and began designing and developing cable hoists. This is where a new chapter in our history began.
1928: After the death of Theodor Kromer, who had no children, the operation was bought by Otto Sellin and was continued according to the founder’s ideas. Kromer and its range of products were expanded.
1939: Because of the greater space required, a second factory was built in Todtnau in the Black Forest. In 1940, Dipl.-Ing. Karl Steinsiek assumed its management.
The war years: The Second World War was an especially difficult test for the company. Otto Sellin’s son, who was to head the company, died on the Eastern Front at the age of 19. In 1944, the main factory in Freiburg was almost entirely destroyed by an Allied bomb.
1949: A great deal of willpower, dedication, and teamwork between company management and staff allowed Kromer to overcome its difficulties and recover. In 1949, the company was able to develop freely once more, making domestic and foreign contacts.
From 1951 on: The Todtnau branch was sold to finance the reconstruction of the Freiburg plant. The second half of the 20th century saw innovation, important inventions, and optimizations at Kromer that raised the company to prime importance in its area.
2000: The most important milestone in company history is probably the takeover of the handling technology division by the internationally active Carl Stahl Group and the change of the company name to Carl Stahl Kromer GmbH in November 2000. Carl Stahl GmbH is also a family-managed business in Swabia, near Göppingen. It focuses on the manufacture and sales of highest-quality steel wire rope and devices for handling loads. Kromer remained largely legally independent.
2017:Kromer could look back with great satisfaction and some pride, as it celebrated its 100-year anniversary in the manufacture of spring balancers and zero-gravity balancers.
We have developed greatly over time not only as a company, but also with respect to our products. The zero-gravity balancers and spring balancers the company once produced would be difficult to recognize today. In the early days of the company, the technology for manufacturing cable hoists, for instance, allowed only cast iron or sheet steel parts. There are now excellent alternatives to those materials. Modern spring balancers and zero-gravity balancers have lower dead weights and can still handle extremely heavy loads with no problem. The product range has been steadily expanded over time, and the load ranges keep increasing as well. Orange has become the color that signals Kromer products. Kromer spring balancers and zero-gravity balancers are used primarily in industry, but enjoy many creative uses in the areas of Sports and Living as well. The future will certainly bring many more innovations, and we will continue to work on them with dedication and creativity.
